The more I delve into Mama’s repertoire, the more riches I find. And what a collaboration KVM has enjoyed with Marudhakasi! Their association deserves a separate hall of fame in TFM. While “manappaarai maadukatti” is the quintessential themmAngu and song of the soundtrack, it doesn’t risk obscurity ever. The SOTD, however, is a lesser-known ditty worthy of wider recognition. To recognize this song is to celebrate it as it just brims with affection, longing, and romance. Here’s a rarity in romantic songs—gentle, dignified courtship. Marudhakasiyin ezhuththil kaathalukku mariyaadhai.
Banumathi may be an acquired taste for some, but the lady gets me every time. What a signature voice! Be it a sad ballad, a flirty dance number, or a passionate duet, she pours her unmistakable personality into it. But with all due accolades to Banumathi, this is one of TMS’ triumphs. With a certain wet, gravelly effect in his rendition, he delivers a fondness for his woman that’s replete with the nobler instincts of love. The repeated “rangam” speaks volumes of the playback singing and composing nuances of a bygone era that are just plain lost today.
