Song of the Day # 1010

From: bb on:  Thu May 21, 2009 7:47 am

Song of the Day: OdugiRa thaNNiyilE from Pillaikkaniyamudhu.

Song: OdugiRa thaNNiyilE
Film: Pillaikkaniyamudhu
Singers: Sirgaazhi Govindarajan, P.Suseela
MD: K.V.Mahadevan
Lyrics: Maruthakasi?

The folk song has become so mainstream and commonplace that it has lost its rustic charm, its native flavor. Crass colloquialism is the entree and encore now in movie songs; poetry and philosophy are paltry, they have been relegated to that dying character or that blind beggar to lend some ancillary poignancy. Aside from being a lure for the desired one, the folk love song often has a narrative that becomes a two-way dialogue. All of this has to be executed with the dignity of a gentle courtship; not the modern version where we are pushed to the confines of our earphones from embarrassment. Anyway, thanks for allowing me some room for rancor on this issue. Now, let's get to the easy charms of folk love in the SOTD. I can almost smell the fragrance of the sandalwood that the lady sings about. Suseela, a lady above other lasses, and Sirghazhi a man above most men, put the old in gold. Nostalgia sometimes is not just a treasured memory, but a wistful reminder of an irreversible past.
